An Exploration of Early Daoist Society - Le 26 septembre 2013
Of Parishes and Registers : An Exploration of Early Daoist Society, conférence du Prof. Terry Kleeman.
Founded by the Celestial Master Zhang Daoling in the mid-second century CE, Daoism is China’s indigenous organized religion. All members of the early Daoist church underwent an ordination ritual and were invested with a register (lu 籙). Believers were organized into parishes (zhi 治) led by religious professionals called libationers (jijiu 祭 酒). A close examination of the rituals and codes concerning registers can tell us much about the structure of early Daoist society. This lecture will explore social relations, the system of training novices, and the evolution of the church organization in early Daoist communities.
